R-410A

R-410A is the HFC refrigerant blend that replaced HCFC-22 as the most common refrigerant in new U.S. home air conditioners; EPA lists its global warming potential as 2,090 and its ASHRAE safety class as A1.
R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend, sold under trade names such as Puron and AZ-20. Its safety class, A1, means lower toxicity and no flame propagation.
Because its global warming potential is well above 700, EPA rules under the AIM Act restrict its use in new residential and light commercial systems made or imported from January 1, 2025. Existing R-410A systems may still be serviced and repaired, and replacement components remain on the market. Under a final rule effective July 27, 2026, equipment made or imported before January 1, 2025 may also still be installed until that stock runs out.
The AIM Act separately phases down the production and consumption of HFCs, so the supply of R-410A for servicing shrinks over time. A system designed for R-410A is serviced with R-410A; newer refrigerants such as R-454B are not drop-in replacements.
