Manual J is the Air Conditioning Contractors of America procedure for calculating a home's room-by-room heating and cooling loads, the starting point for choosing the size of a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump.
A Manual J calculation works from the house itself: the areas and insulation values of walls, ceilings, windows and floors, air leakage, duct losses where ducts are used, and solar and internal gains for cooling. It applies the local design temperature and indoor set points to find the heat the house loses on a design winter day and gains on a design summer day.
The result is a load in Btu per hour, not an equipment size. A companion procedure, ACCA Manual S, selects equipment whose capacity at design conditions matches that load. Washington’s residential energy code, based on the 2021 IECC, requires equipment to be sized with Manual S from Manual J loads or another approved method.
Floor area alone is a poor substitute. In a DOE fact sheet, two 2,000-square-foot homes in Raleigh, North Carolina, built to different standards had Manual J heating loads of 46,100 and 21,300 Btu/h.
The procedure already includes safety factors. The NEEP sizing guide warns against padding the results, and DOE’s Building America guidance says rounding up is not needed when Manual J is followed. Overstated air leakage is a common source of error; NEEP recommends a blower door test instead of an estimate.
